When I first heard this tune, I had a sudden flash back to my childhood playing Nintendo games, especially Super Mario's World & Zelda. The pulsating digital keys are reminiscent of the haunted castle level in Mario. The production style is unique and the vocals also sound great. The artist is Babsy Dixon. Arranged by the Steely & Cleevie and produced by Bobby Digital (King Jammy's engineer during the mid to late 80's), the tune ranks among the best releases of the time (mostly Jammy's productions). However, it seems lost among these torrent of releases. listen

In my opinion, this Junior Kahadaffie track is one of the top tunes of the 80s. The tune is gritty and dark which is analogous to the seedy NYC streets of the time. Unfortunately there is no "Chapter Two" release on this label, I guess "Chapter One" was impossible to top so they ended the book there. listen

Performed by Anthony Selassie with Tony Tuff - "Starvation" on the flip, this is the 2nd and only (to my knowledge) Rythem track 12" released in the 80s. Again, like "Big Bout Ya," production is ahead of its time for a '85 release. Criss lick of the Greenbay Killing/Youthman riddim.

Strickly Positive Vibes A Deal With

Every time I listen to this Tony Roach flamer I'm amazed at the fact that it was released in 1985, the year of the Sleng-Teng/Computerized revolution. It's safe to say that this release has its place in "digital" history. Like "Sleng Teng," the production was so far ahead of its time and it still sounds fresh to this day.

Tough and heavy digital lick of the cuss cuss riddim. Performed by Telford Nelson aka Tilly, the bass from this late 80s release is monstrous. I serendipitously found it for a few $ at an online shop that sold only re-issues and I incorrectly assumed it was one. Also released on the same label as a 7". Listen

Rock It Over Here

"Cool Down The Pace" (Jedi, '84)

Pad Anthony double sided killer 12" ("Rock it Over Here" real rock riddim flipside). Tough Myrie & Marshall productions. "Cool Down The Pace," on a heavy lick of Cuss Cuss, is the shining star on this one. The dub to the track is extremely heavy and well mixed. listen

Here's a random UK label release that utilizes a heavy, swinging, bass-driven Jammy's digital riddim with some wicked hand claps. Artist is Errol Burrell. Admiral Tibett - "Feel The Vibes" (Jammy's 7", '85) & Leroy Smart - "Call On Me" (56 Hope Rd. 7", '86) also utilizes this riddim. listen
